MONROE,
Ga. -- Local area FFA members gathered for the annual North
Region FFA-EMC Electrification Wiring Contest to test their
knowledge and skills on basic electricity. FFA chapters from
Newton, Oconee and Walton counties participated in the contest
held on Nov. 10 at Walton Electric Membership Corporation
(EMC).
Participants were given an electrical scenario to solve and
diagram, then asked to construct an electric circuit. The
students were required to give a speech demonstration related
to electrical circuits and completed a problem-solving section.
Oconee
County FFA had two participants, Matthew Derda and Jeremy
Farmer. Derda placed first in the competition, followed by
Farmer with second place. Oconee
also won the first place chapter award.
Derda
said he enjoyed the opportunity of doing everything under
pressure and in a work setting.
Monroe Area FFA members included Justin Hopper and Chris Morris.
Hopper placed third and Morris took fourth place in the competition.
Monroe Area received second place in the chapter award.
FFA
members receive training through agricultural education courses
and participating in after-school programs.
Place winners received a new tool set compliments of Walton
EMC. Each chapter will send one representative to the district
wiring competition to be held in December.
