MONROE, Ga. -- Walton Electric Membership Corporation is preparing
for the possibility that remnants of Hurricane Frances will affect
the cooperative's ten-county service territory.
"It's still too early to tell if Hurricane Frances will threaten
our area," says Walton EMC's Greg Brooks. "We want consumers
to be assured that we're ready to restore electric service in the
event we're affected by this storm."
Walton EMC has been monitoring weather conditions for several days
and has contingency plans to address problems associated with high
winds and tree damage should the area experience severe weather.
The co-op has mobilized employees, prepared trucks with emergency
equipment and procured materials in anticipation of the storm. Additionally,
South Georgia EMCs that could be hardest hit have called on unaffected
EMCs to provide support.
According to Brooks, all EMC departments are preparing and all personnel
are on standby.
"We will continue to watch this storm closely," says Brooks.
"We also remind our members to keep abreast of the storm's
development and take precautions in the event this area does experience
the effects of Hurricane Frances."
Customers should contact Walton EMC to report power outages at 770/267-2505
or via the Internet at www.waltonemc.com. The co-op's web site also
contains extensive information on outage preparation and electricity
restoration.
Established in 1936, Walton EMC is a consumer-owned electric cooperative
with 105,000 accounts in ten Northeast Georgia counties between
Atlanta and Athens.
