MONROE,
Ga. – Monroe Area High School FFA received top honors at the
recent Sub-Region FFA-EMC Electrification Career Development Event
(CDE) held at Walton Electric Membership Corporation (EMC). Sponsored
by Walton EMC, the event promotes safe and efficient use of electricity.
Seven
students from Newton and Walton counties participated in the contest.
These students are enrolled in agricultural education courses and
choose to further their skills by participating in CDEs.
The
students are given a wiring problem to solve, and they must choose
the necessary materials to construct an electric circuit. Once the
circuit is installed, students answer problem-solving exercises
and then discuss in an oral presentation the steps to complete a
specific electrical wiring task.
Students'
work is evaluated and scores are tallied. The top three individuals
receive a set of wiring tools, and the top two chapters receive
an engraved plaque.

Monroe
Area FFA received the first place chapter award. Chapter participants
included Xavier Cotto, first place individual, and Teion McKnight
with fourth place.
Jonathan
Banks; Andrew Caruana, third place individual; Stephen Heil; and
Ricky Ford from Loganville High School FFA also competed in the
CDE.
“This
event uses a hands-on approach for high school students to develop
their wiring skills,” says Dan Guy, Walton EMC's marketing specialist
and this year's event coordinator. “It's an opportunity to support
our local schools and promote
electrical safety at the same time.”
Cotto
will advance to the North Region competition held in mid-December
in Jefferson.
Georgia

FFA Electrification CDEs across the state.
Walton
EMC is a customer-owned electric company serving more than 107,000
accounts in ten Northeast Georgia counties between Athens and Atlanta.
