Walton EMC's Dan Guy (left) honors Loganville FFA's Advisor Abby Needham, Isaac Brooks and Steven Heil along with Oconee FFA's Jacob Brown, Vincent Morgan, Chuck Taylor and Advisor Sidney Bell for their success in the Electrification Career Development Event.

MONROE, Ga. Local FFA members enhanced their vocational skills during the annual Sub-Region FFA-EMC Electrification Career Development Event (CDE). Sponsored by Walton Electric Membership Corporation (EMC), the event promotes safe, efficient electrical wiring skills.

Seven FFA members from Newton, Oconee and Walton counties competed for top honors at Walton EMC's Monroe headquarters. Students in the agricultural education program expand their learning by participating in CDEs. The event challenges the students through problem solving, wiring and a demonstration.

The students begin the contest by solving a wiring problem. Participants translate a wiring diagram, select the necessary wiring materials for the problem and then install a complete electric circuit.

Upon construction of the circuit, students answer problem-solving exercises based on their understanding of the National Electric Code. The students end with a demonstration before a panel of judges explaining the steps to complete an electrical wiring task.

After evaluating students' work, the top three win electrical tools and the top two chapters with the highest combined scores are awarded plaques.

Loganville High School participants included Isaac Brooks and Steven Heil.

Oconee County FFA members included Jacob Brown, Jacob Daniel, Vincent Morgan and Chuck Taylor. Daniel placed second in the event with the highest individual score in problem solving, and Morgan placed third. The chapter won second place overall.

Daniel competes at the North Region competition December 17 in Jefferson.

Georgia's EMCs partner with the Georgia Department of Education to sponsor

and host FFA Electrification Career Development Events across the state. FFA is a national organization of agricultural education students.

Walton EMC is a customer-owned electric cooperative, serving 110,000 accounts in 10 Northeast Georgia counties. Its subsidiary, Walton EMC Natural Gas, serves customers statewide.
