MONROE,
Ga. - To
help give all babies a fighting chance, the employees of Walton
Electric Membership Corporation raised $14,292 for this year's Walton-Morgan
County March of Dimes
WalkAmerica. The cooperative's Power Team took first place overall
for money raised out of 45 teams.
Every
day in the United States, 1,280 babies are born too soon, some so
small they have to fight for their lives. Ninety-four babies are
born with hearts that don't work properly, and 76 babies die.
“The
March of Dimes affects
everyone,” says Kathy Ivie, chairperson for the event and Walton
EMC's team captain. “Even if you do not have children or plan
to, we were all babies at one time.”
Walton
EMC's Power Team also received the Spirit Award and recognition
for raising the most money the night of the event.
Since
1999, Walton EMC has raised over $183,000 for the March of Dimes
to help fund research and innovative prevention programs to save
babies from death or disability.
“The
March of Dimes funded
the research for developing polio vaccinations and research for
helping keep premature babies alive,” Ivie adds.
