MONROE,
Ga. - Walton Electric Membership Corporation’s (EMC) Operation Roundup Board awarded thousands of dollars in grant money to local charities at their September 25 meeting.
Operation Roundup is a program that, for enrolled customer-owners, rounds up electric bills to the next dollar, using the extra change to fund worthy causes in the community.
Barrow County Habitat for Humanity received $2,000 for their Building a Better Barrow program, a program designed to eliminate substandard housing in Barrow County. The money will be used to help pay for replacement windows and upgrades in plumbing, electrical, HVAC and septic systems.
The Loganville Police Department was awarded $4,500 to support the D.A.R.E. program. The program gives children the skills necessary to recognize and resist the pressure to become involved in drugs, gang activity or violent crimes.
The Athens-Oconee CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) received $6,000 to assist with their advocacy program. This program supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes.
The Board also voted to assist five families in need in the Walton EMC service area.
The average Operation Roundup donation is 50 cents a month, but with 43,893 customer-owners enrolled (38 percent of customer-owners), it adds up to make a big impact in the community. Customer-owners wishing to enroll in Operation Roundup can do so by initialing the Operation Roundup box on the bill stub.
Walton EMC is a customer-owned power company that serves 115,000 accounts over its ten-county service area between Atlanta and Athens.
