MONROE, Ga. – “We
have to raise every cent.” That’s what Melanie Unchuan, executive
director of the John P. and Joyce C. Stevens Boys and Girls Club says when
asked how her organization gets money to operate.
The
900,000 cents just donated by Walton EMC employees from their Charity Golf
Classic should help. Over 100 golfers braved the cold, damp weather on April
14 at Lane Creek Golf Course to drive, chip and putt so the Boys and Girls
Club can continue its mission. As a result, a group of Walton EMC employees
just presented the club a check for $9,000.
“Our
mission is to enable young people, through quality developmental programs,
to become productive adults,” says Unchuan. Boys and Girls Clubs offer
programs and services so young people don’t have to turn to the streets
to find recreation and companionship.
The
Monroe club currently serves 274 young people. Unchuan wants to get that
figure to 600.
“I’m
impressed,” says Walton EMC CEO Ronnie Lee. “This facility is
amazing. The people here are doing good work.”
Walton
EMC is a cooperative; that means the customers own the company. One of the
seven cooperative principles it follows is “Concern for Community.” That’s
why Walton EMC and its employees constantly support community charities.
Walton
EMC serves 119,000 accounts over its ten-county service area between Atlanta
and Athens.
