Steps to Beating Lightning Damage

Step 1: Pole Mounted Lightning Arresters
Walton EMC’s pole mounted lightning arrestors reduce the size of a catastrophic lightning strike to our lines. This protection, while helping tame the strike, is designed to protect our power line equipment and not appliances or electronics. You should provide three more levels of protection at the structure.

Step 2: Good Ground System
A good ground systemat your home or business is essential. The ground system gives
excess current that lightning induces in your electrical system an easy path to ground.Without a good ground, the lightning current will find another path that may include through your home, its electrical system or the el
ectronics and appliances connected inside.

An adequate ground system also helps take care of surges caused by electric motors. It is essential that all grounds at your home or business be connected at a single
point. Many times the phone or TV system is connected to a diff erent ground rod than
the electric system. This can be worse than having no ground system at all.

Walton EMC is happy to evaluate your ground system and suggest improvements at a reasonable cost.

Step 3: Meter Mounted Protection
A large appliance motor protector from Walton EMC reduces surge current that tries to enter your home or business from a lightning strike. It protects the large motors in your home and also helps individual point-of-use protectors to their job. For only $6.25 a month, we install and maintain the protector. That’s much cheaper than paying an insurance deductible and risking the cancellation of your policy.

Step 4: Point-of-Use Protection

The last line of defense is a pointof-use protector for electronic devices. These protectors should be used for all electronics, including TVs, VCRs, DVD players, computers, telephones/answering machines, cash registers and home theater
systems.

Don’t neglect protecting phone and TV connections too. If you have electronics that
have TV inputs, make sure to choose surge protectors that have TV connections.

Walton EMC guarantees your appliances and electronics won’t be damaged by
lightning if they’re protected by our Real Protection program. And the Real
Protection surge protectors are guaranteed for life!
