What
You'll See
“Power
to the People!” visits five areas on the path to lighting Georgia:
“By
Our Hands Alone” looks at life before electric power.
Visitors feel the struggles rural Georgians faced and see their
resourcefulness during those hard times. This section also looks
at the growth of electricity in the United States and the unsuccessful
efforts to bring electric power to the countryside.
“The
Quest for Rural Power” shows the development of the Rural
Electrification Administration, one of FDR's New Deal programs.
It details the issues and rhetoric surrounding the New Deal and
also shows that some Americans weren't in favor of New Deal initiatives.
“It's
Coming!” expresses the excitement and anticipation of
rural citizens as they learn electric power is no longer just a
dream. It also traces the steps these customer-owned cooperatives
followed to obtain loans, build lines and bring electricity to themselves.
“Living
Better Electrically” relates stories of how EMC customer-owners
embraced this new technology and explains the important role co-ops
played in educating rural citizens on the possibilities electricity
brings.
“Lost Horizons, New Horizons”
examines issues and events that shaped EMCs and how cooperative
electrification fits into the broader social, political and economic
framework of modern life. It ends by challenging viewers to imagine
what will follow rural electrification and be the “next greatest thing.”
