Seasonal Madness to Seasonal Gladness

If you missed Walton EMC's annual holiday programs, here's a popular idea Gloria Berry shared with guests: a velvet shawl, throw or tablecloth.

“Velvet in a rich, jewel-like shade is perfect for an elegant accessory,” Berry says. “Perhaps you could make a shawl or a throw for your sofa or a tablecloth. The innovative and remarkable technique of embossing the velvet using rubber stamps makes a truly stunning piece.”

Materials

Rayon or polyester velvet – choose dimensions to suit your project

Large rubber stamps

Iron

Ironing board

Sewing thread to match the velvet

Needle

Step One

Select two or three large rubber stamps in festive and complementary designs. Determine the dimensions of fabric needed according to its future use—shawl, throw or tablecloth. Now select the fabric color.

Note: Velvet tends to be more expensive than other fabrics. Watch for sales or use a coupon for a better deal.

Step Two

Decide on the approximate position of each stamp. Make a sketch or mark on the back of the velvet with a piece of chalk if necessary. Keep the pattern random, alternating the motifs and placing them at different angles.

Note: This example features only one stamp to pattern the design around the edges of the tablecloth.

Step Three

Invert the stamp on the ironing board. Place the velvet over the rubber stamp, nap side down , where you want the image to appear.

Step Four

Take a hot, dry iron and firmly press down on the back of the velvet over the rubber stamp. Hold for 5 to 8 seconds. Use the heel of the iron and avoid the steam holes (they can also leave impressions on the velvet). Repeat this process with all the rubber stamps until you've completed your design.

Step Five

Roll in the edges of the velvet to the wrong sides and blind hemstitch in place using the matching sewing thread.

Step Six – Optional

Fold the finished product and tie a bow using festive ribbon. What a great way to say happy holidays by giving a handmade gift!
