Pledge
to Electrical Safety
Renew
your commitment during National Electrical Safety Month
Electricity
is so handy and dependable that we take it for granted.
Think about the dozens of chores we do around the house with
the help of electric power.
This
month, make the commitment to discuss electrical safety
with everyone in your family and workplace. Make sure they know
how to avoid safety hazards and what to do if an electrical
emergency occurs. Use this list to get started:
Cords
and Outlets
- Get
rid of any appliance or electrical device with a damaged
cord or plug.
- Cover
unused outlets with child protective covers.
- Make
sure outlets near sinks, tubs or other wet locations are
protected with ground fault circuit interrupters.
- Don’t
run extension cords under rugs or furniture.

- Never
remove the third prong on a three-pronged plug. Never defeat
the third prong by using an AC adapter.
- Always
be aware of the extension cord location when using electric
outdoor tools like hedge trimmers or lawn mowers.
- Unplug
electrical devices by grasping the plug, not by yanking
on the cord.
Power
Lines
- Do
not let children play on or around underground transformers.
- Keep
tall objects, like antenna masts, extension ladders
or pool cleaning poles clear of power lines.
- Stay
away from Walton EMC equipment or crews working on
power lines.
- Call
800/282-7411 before doing any digging so underground
power lines can be marked.
Electrical
Emergencies
- Teach
your family and co-workers how to shut off the main
disconnect in case someone is being shocked or another
electrical emergency occurs. The main disconnect may
either be indoors or outside.
- Stay
away from fallen power lines and call 911 and Walton
EMC.
- Do
not touch a person who’s in contact with any
live electric wire.
