Up
to the Task
Task
lighting saves energy, provides improved visibility
Task or
spot lighting is an easy way to save energy. But it also provides the
benefit
of improved visibility, especially for close work or reading.
 |
| Task lighting
has a number of applications in homes and businesses. |
You
may have noticed it’s hard to read under a dim lamp unless you move in
close. That’s because as the distance from the light increases, the
same amount of illumination falls on a larger area.
The concept
is simple; instead of lighting the entire room with a ceiling mounted fixture,
concentrate the light on the spot where it’s needed. That provides
for more intense light on the task at hand.
So instead
of running a ceiling fixture with three 100-watt bulbs, you can get better
lighting by using only one 60-watt spotlight. The savings increase if you
replace the incandescent spotlight bulb with a compact fluorescent.
If you need
extra high lighting levels, room lights and spotlights can be used at the
same time.
Task lights
come in several different styles, from plug-in mini fluorescents to hard-wired
halogen track lights. With all task lights, make sure the light is positioned
so your body doesn’t cast a shadow on
the workspace.
