Local FFA Members Show Electrical Skills

Compete in local, region events

Several local FFA members did well in recent electrification career development events (CDE) hosted by Walton EMC and the Georgia Department of Education. The CDEs give students the chance to put skills learned in the classroom to practical use.

Students from the Loganville, Monroe Area, North Oconee and Oconee FFA chapters participated in the sub-region event held at Walton EMC’s Monroe headquarters. The sub-region CDE prepares students for the region CDE and serves as an instructional gathering for both students and their instructors.

Vaughn Collett from Oconee FFA took top honors at the sub-region CDE. Besides having the top scores in each of the three event components, Collett made a perfect score in the wiring exercise.

Floyd Atha of Monroe Area FFA placed second while Tanner Herrington of North Oconee came in third. Other participants included Andrew Peterson and Blake Strickland of North Oconee and Brandon Willett and Jacob Ridgedell of Loganville.

Collett, Atha and Herrington represented their chapters at the region CDE held in Jefferson. Collett placed fourth overall and had the highest score of the event in the wiring exercise. Herrington went on to place eighth while Atha came in 12th.

Georgia’s EMCs partner with the State Department of Education to sponsor sub-region, region and state electrification CDEs. These events date back to the 1960s and have given thousands of FFA members a basic, working knowledge of good wiring practices and the use of electricity in safe, efficient ways.
