Help Walton EMC Battle Cancer

For
the fifth year, the motorcycle community has teamed up with Walton EMC in
the fight to find a cure for cancer.
Over
250 riders came to the cooperative’s headquarters in Monroe on Saturday,
September 22 to participate in the fifth Power of Hope ride. In addition
to the actual ride, entrants enjoyed a barbeque lunch, door prizes and a
complimentary event t-shirt.
Taz
Casey, a fifth grader at Social Circle Elementary served as honorary ride
captain. A nine-year cancer survivor, Casey was diagnosed with the condition
at three weeks of age. He spent his first year of life in chemotherapy.
Casey’s
official duties included giving the command for riders to start their engines
and accompanying the Walton County sheriff’s deputy leading the ride.
The
ride ran smoothly, thanks to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman.
“The
Walton County Sheriff’s Office went the extra mile before and during
the ride to make sure it was safe and trouble-free,” said WEMC Communications
Coordinator Greg Brooks. “The ride wouldn’t happen without them.”
Georgia
State Patrol Troopers also assisted in escorting the ride as it wound through
scenic rural sections of Walton and Morgan counties.
“Motorcyclists
are one of the most supportive and caring groups around,” said Brooks. “They
put their money where their heart is.”
That support has amounted to
$24,000 over the last five years of the Power of Hope ride. Through the Relay
for Life, that money will hopefully one day make cancer a distant memory.
