EMC Fosters Career Development
Local
high school students practice wiring, electrical skills
FFA
members from Oconee, Walton and Morgan counties tested their mastery of
electrical skills at the Sub-Region FFA-EMC Electrification Career Development
Event (CDE) held recently at the co-op’s headquarters.
Vaughn
Collett, from Oconee County High School, took top honors at the competition
for the second consecutive year. Collett’s teammate, Noah Shealy
placed second.
Floyd
Atha of Monroe Area High School, who also placed in the 2006 competition,
took third.
Oconee
County had the highest overall team score. North Oconee High School placed
second.
Westley
Hester also competed as part of the Oconee County team. Competing for North
Oconee were Amber Painter and Trent Hammock. Participants
from Monroe Area High School included Atha, Justin Jones and Chris Brown.
Rodney Wynne and David Crist competed for Morgan County High School.
Collett,
Atha, Painter and Wynne went on to compete in the North Region competition
on December 8 in Jefferson.
The
annual event includes a wiring problem requiring participants to translate
a wiring diagram, select the correct wiring materials and then install
a complete electric circuit. Other parts of the event include questions
based on their understanding of the National Electric Code and a demonstration
of an electrical wiring task before a panel of judges.
Walton
EMC partners with the Georgia Department of Education to sponsor and
host the FFA Electrification CDE. FFA is a national
organization of agricultural education students with 25,544 Georgia members.
