TV
seems to be one of those electric conveniences we can’t live without.
But
if you get your TV signal from a regular antenna, that’s just what
you’ll be doing if you don’t take action before February 17,
2009.
That’s
when the switch to digital TV signals takes place. Your old analog set will
still work if you buy a converter box. And the government
is willing to help.
You
can qualify for up to two $40 coupons toward the purchase of converter boxes.
The boxes typically run from $50 to $60, making your final purchase price
between $10 and $20.
You
won’t need a converter box if your TV already has a digital tuner built
in. If you get TV from cable or satellite, there’s no worry either.
Why
the change? Digital signals take up less space. After the switch, that extra
space will be given to fire and police agencies for emergency communication.
Also, digital pictures are clearer and digital transmission allows more programming
options.
