Green
Power Still Available
Easy
way to help the environment
You
can help the environment every time you pay your electric bill.
Walton
EMC is still offering its customer-owners the choice of having some of their
electricity supplied by green generating methods. Your participation supports
several different generating processes across Georgia:
Landfill
Gas
This
gas, normally burned off in a giant flare, comes from decaying matter buried
in landfills. The gas is captured, cleaned and used to power small electric
generating plants near Columbus and Fayetteville.
Low-Impact
Hydro
This
dam, above Athens, does not significantly alter the flow of the river.
Solar
Several
solar sites are in use around the state at various schools, including Oconee
County High. This gives students a chance to learn and experiment with solar
power during the generation process.
Chicken
Litter
A
plant in Northeast Georgia will come on line shortly that uses refuse from
poultry houses to fuel a medium-sized generating plant. The litter is turned
into an inert ash with a volume several times smaller than the original material.
Wind
A
wind assessment study is underway at Rocky Mountain near Rome. The results
will show if this green generating technology is practical for Georgia.
You
can sponsor a 150 kilowatt-hour block of green power for only $2.95 a month
(added to your regular power bill). For each kilowatt-hour sold, one-half
cent goes to a research and development fund to look at future green power
projects.
A
kilowatt-hour is the way we measure your electricity use. A 150 kilowatt-hour
block will run a refrigerator for about two months.
