What is Green Power EMC?
Green Power EMC is a not-for-profit cooperative set up to obtain
and market electricity from cleaner energy sources to
the members of the participating Georgia EMCs, including
Walton.
What is green power?
Green power is electricity produced by renewable and more environmentally
friendly sources, such as solar and wind power; biomass; and
hydropower technologies that do not involve damming rivers.
These sources have less effect on air, water and natural resources
than creating electricity from fossil fuels such as coal and
oil.
What green energy sources does Green Power
EMC use? |
| Green
Power EMC's sources are landfill gas (methane), low impact
hydroelectric, chicken
litter gasification and solar power.
Why is Walton EMC participating in Green
Power EMC? |
Walton EMC offers its members choices on many services. Now,
we are able to offer the choice of how some of their power
is generated, providing customers concerned about the environment
an opportunity to purchase green energy.
How does Walton EMC offer this green
energy?
| Walton
and other participating EMCs receive an allocation
of the power generated by Green Power EMC. Residential customers
can purchase 150 kilowatt-hour blocks of green energy on
a first-come, first-served basis. Signup will continue until
all of Walton EMC's blocks are assigned. Once customers have
subscribed to all of Walton EMC's blocks, additional interested
customers will be put on a waiting list and contacted when
additional green power becomes available.
How much energy is 150 kilowatt-hours of
electricity? |
Two average refrigerators can run one month on 150 kWh of electricity.
The average WEMC household uses about 1,500 kWh of electricity
per month.
What does this green energy cost?
Green energy customers pay a small surcharge of $2.95 per
month, or 2 cents per kilowatt-hour, per block to cover
the added expense of generating from a green source.
How are customers billed for green
power? |
| A line
item for green power appears on your electric bill.
How do I know I'm getting the green
power I'm paying for? |
There's no way to send the exact electrons generated from renewable
resources to your home. By subscribing to green power,
you're encouraging investment in environmentally friendly
power generation. Every green power kilowatt-hour you purchase
means that Walton EMC is purchasing one less kilowatt-hour
from other sources.
What if I sign up for green power and
change my mind? |
| There's
no contract for green power. If you change your mind about subscribing,
you can simply call Walton EMC and cancel your subscription.
