What does it take to become a Walton EMC lineman?

More than you might think -- seven years of training, study and on-the-job experience.

YEAR ONE
Line Technician Trainee I

  • Assists more experienced line employees by performing any manual ground work.
  • Introduced to pole climbing and equipment operation.
  • Attends training and schools.
  • Receives on-the-job training and work experience under close supervision.

YEAR TWO
Line Technician Trainee II

  • Continuation of year one training.

YEARS THREE THROUGH FIVE
Apprentice Line Technician

  • Continuation of year one training.
    AND...
  • Instructs equipment operator.
  • Performs duties under close supervision of lead or journeyman line technician.
  • Performs hot line work.
  • Observes and trains employees under his direction.

YEARS SIX AND SEVEN
Line Technician

  • Performs duties under supervision of lead or journeyman line technician.
  • Instructs trouble crew and line personnel assigned for assistance.
  • Directs activities of the line crew under supervision of lead or journeyman line technician.
  • Completes utility lineman's correspondence course.

Journeyman Line Technician

  • Directs activities of line crew in absence of supervisor.
  • Performs as lead journeyman line technician when directed.
  • Directs apprentice, trainee, equipment operator and underground technician.
  • Trains line positions.
