Decades of innovation: A look back at the Annual Meeting

The annual members’ meeting gives members the opportunity to elect a board of directors from among themselves. These directors oversee the operation of the business and look out for the best interests of their fellow members.

April 1951
The first Walton EMC annual meetings were held at the old Monroe High School on Bold Springs Avenue and continued there until the mid-1950s. This shot from 1951 showed that it was a dressy occasion with more than 2,000 members in attendance. Over the years, prominent speakers addressed the annual meeting crowd on a variety of timely topics.

The annual meetings during the first few decades of the cooperative were multi-day events and included church choir competitions, beauty pageants and talent contests. Pictured here are winners of the talent contest from 1958.

The meeting moved to the American Legion Shed in Monroe on Alcovy Street in the mid-1950s and stayed there until 1996. Besides the business session and director election, members enjoyed entertainment and prize drawings.

A longstanding annual meeting favorite is the member bucket, which includes light bulbs and other assorted goodies.

Growth necessitated moving the meeting to the Walton County Agricultural Education Center on Criswell Road in 1996. The roomy facility allowed the cooperative to expand member seating, parking, children’s activities, vendor exhibits and the health fair. It also made audio-visual presentations possible during the business meeting, which enhanced members’ participation and experience.
