Doing Double Duty: Light Bulb Security Cameras

Adding another layer of home security can be as simple as screwing in a light bulb. Providing both illumination and discreet video surveillance simultaneously, light bulbs with built-in video cameras are an easy and inexpensive way to keep watch on the interior and exterior of your home.

Twisting the bulb into a standard light fixture provides the power the camera needs to function. Once it’s screwed in, the wireless device works on your home Wi-Fi. Images from the camera can be remotely viewed on a computer or mobile device via an app.

Light bulb cameras with features such as motion detection, wide-angle object tracking, night vision, HD video capabilities and two-way audio start at around $40 each. Since the bulb is an LED, it’s also energy efficient.

Bulb cameras are widely available at electronics and home improvement stores.
