Safety: It’s no accident

Safety is a daily priority at Walton EMC. And that doesn’t happen by accident.

“Along with delivering safe, affordable electricity, your co-op employees are committed to routine practices that prevent personal injury and costly accidents,” said Ryan West, safety and training instructor at Walton EMC.

This month, Walton EMC joins the National Safety Council in observing National Safety Month to raise awareness of injury and accident prevention. West shares these safety practices for keeping yourself and others accident-free on the job or at home:

  1. KEEP IT CLEAN. “The condition of the job can be better controlled by keeping your area clean.”
  2. STAY ORGANIZED. “A lack of organization can change our behavior and overall attitude, resulting in shortcuts that can lead to accidents.”
  3. KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS. “Don’t let pride get in the way of making the right decision. If it’s too heavy, ask for help or get the right equipment. If you can’t figure it out, find someone who can.”
  4. BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. “Know how to get around, how to get out, what to do, where to go and who to call in an emergency situation.”
  5. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. “When you spot something that’s potentially unsafe, speak up immediately.”
  6. KEEP YOUR EYES UP. “Distractions are constant; and it’s easy to fall prey to the temptation to answer, text or view our phones while walking or driving. Before you do, think about those who love you, and weigh the consequences.”

West urges Walton EMC members to be the safety example your family needs, saying: “It seems as though we have fewer and fewer good examples to live by. Make the change and be one for those you love.”
